art-behind-the-air-part-2Beautiful balloons were only the beginning. As Affairs Afloat Balloons grew, I learned something important: creating beautiful balloon décor and running a professional balloon company are two very different things.

In the beginning, creativity was everything. Could we make it beautiful? Could we bring an idea to life? Could we create something that made people stop, smile, take pictures, and remember the event?

But as the events became bigger and the clients became larger, I realized creativity alone wasn’t enough.

What the Client Doesn’t See

When you walk into an event, you see the finished installation. You see the balloon arches, columns, walls, centerpieces, or custom designs perfectly positioned and ready for guests.

What you don’t see is everything that happened before we arrived.

  • The planning.
  • The design conversations.
  • The ordering and inventory.
  • The preparation.
  • The scheduling.
  • The loading.
  • The transportation.
  • The venue coordination.
  • The installation timeline.

And, most importantly, the team making sure all those moving pieces come together when they’re supposed to. That’s our job.

Our clients shouldn’t have to worry about whether we’re going to show up, whether the design will work in the space, or whether everything will be finished before their guests arrive.

They already have an event to manage. Our responsibility is to make our part of it easy.

Professionalism Became Part of the Product

The bigger the event, the more important reliability becomes.

When you’re decorating for a university event, corporate celebration, hospital function, school district event, fundraiser, gala, or major community gathering, there may be hundreds (or thousands) of people walking through those doors.

  • There are schedules to meet.
  • Venues to coordinate with.
  • Other vendors working around you.
  • Executives, employees, students, families, donors, or community members arriving at a specific time.

At that point, beautiful balloons are expected.

Professional execution is what makes the difference.

That’s when I began to understand that professionalism wasn’t simply something that supported our product. Professionalism was part of the product.

From Vendor to Partner

Then something exciting started happening. Clients came back. One event became another. One department introduced us to another. A client who trusted us with one celebration began calling us for additional events throughout the year. And that changed the business.

We weren’t simply a balloon vendor someone called when they needed decorations. We were becoming a trusted event partner.

We learned our clients’ spaces, their expectations, and what worked for their audiences and their events. And they learned they could depend on us. That relationship is something we value tremendously.

Because the best compliment isn’t simply hearing: “The balloons looked amazing.”

It’s hearing: “We have another event coming up. Can you help us with this one too?”

More Than Balloons

Today, when I look at Affairs Afloat Balloons, I still see the creativity that started everything. But I also see everything we had to build around that creativity.

  • Systems.
  • Processes.
  • Experience.
  • A team.
  • Relationships.
  • And a reputation for showing up and getting the job done.

More than two decades later, we still love seeing the reaction when someone walks into a room we’ve transformed. But now I understand what it took to get us there.

Creativity started the business.
Professionalism helped it grow.
Trust turned clients into long-term partners.

And as those relationships grew, something else began to happen. The rooms, events, and expectations bot bigger too.
